A Conversation with Jan Daley

What initially sparked your interest in pursuing a career in the arts for those who may not be familiar with your background?

It goes way back to early childhood. My grandmother used to take me to Saturday afternoon Matinees. On one Saturday we saw one particular movie with one particular singer. I whispered in her ear and said, “That’s what I want to do, Nana.” The Movie, The Wizard of Oz, the singer, Judy Garland!

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single?

I just remember when I had a boyfriend, I went into this mode where I tried to be the best of me. In other words, I tried to be what I thought they were looking for. As I look back, I finally figured out that I just needed to be myself, but I wrote this song before I learned that.

What themes or emotions are explored in this song? Joy and the adventure of new love.

How does this single fit into the larger narrative of your music career or your upcoming projects?

Well, it is pure joy and excitement for my next album having only my originals in it. This is the first time that my songs will be put to the test. So, it’s both scary and thrilling at the same time.

Could you describe the creative process behind this single, from concept to production?

My latest song is “The Girls in Love,” which is riding the Country Charts at #11. I wrote several years ago about how it feels when you are in a new romance! The thrill of it all and the things a woman does for her man. Things we do that maybe men don’t even realize. Like getting our bodies in better shape, maybe changing our hair style or makeup. Buying new lingerie, candles, and sexier outfits. Then there is making the effort to do what he loves; football, fishing, hiking, you name it! I’ve always done this throughout my life, cause “The Girls in Love!”
I had demoed it for another artist and Michael B. Sutton, my record producer came in and tweaked it with some Steel guitars and gave it, it’s magic!

What can listeners expect to experience or feel when they listen to this track?

Hopefully they will start tapping their toes to the beat and won’t be able to get the chorus out of their minds! That’s what has happened to Michael and his wife Anissa Boudjaoui ( my social media gal),and even my Videographers, Carolyn & Mark Maryonovch can’t seem to get this song out of their heads!!

Are there any interesting stories or anecdotes from the recording or writing of this song that you’d like to share?

Actually, this song had been laying around my house for a while and when Virgin heard my first single, “The Way of a Woman” they loved my voice and asked if I had any more songs. My record company, Sound f LA, sent them 6 of my songs. When they heard this song, they went wild and said, “This gal is a songwriter!! We’re going to make her our next Dolly Parden!!”

As an artist, can you identify three key traits that define you?

The range of my voice, the different textures of my voice that seem to adapt to any genres of music. People have told me that my lower register gives them chills.

What can we anticipate in terms of your upcoming projects?

The new album will have only my originals, which will include songs I wrote about people and incidents that were instrumental in my life!
During Covid I started writing my life story and how it has intertwined with my fathers, who I never got to meet. He was an Air Force pilot who was shot down after the WWII picking up POW’s. It will either be a book or limited series having many of these songs in it!
