An Exclusive Conversation with Harbor & Home

What initially sparked your interest in pursuing a career in the arts for those who may
not be familiar with your background?

My initial spark to start a band came from seeing a small local band open for a larger one at a venue in town. I remember going back home after the show saying to myself, « I could do that » and essentially started to put the pieces together. I didn’t have the same experience as some have since most of my friends weren’t in music so I didn’t have a large community of musicians around me and had to seek those relationships out.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single?

‘Oh My Brother’ is a song that I co-wrote with an old band mate from the original iteration of the band, and we really wanted to explore this tune that had been bouncing around our heads for a long time. The song is essentially about returning to our roots and learning how to truly love one another. I feel as though love has become a conditional thing in our culture at times and I have a problem with that. It’s not true love if there are conditions.

What themes or emotions are explored in this song?
Love, returning to our roots, learning from the past, growing into better human beings.

How does this single fit into the larger narrative of your music career or your upcoming
projects?

Well our career has been marked by one simple mission, « Being a light in the dark, whatever dark that may be. » I’ve always thought that music has such promise when paired with a positive outlook and mindset. I understand that things in life can be difficult and sometimes we need to feel the pain or sorrow that comes with it, but I tend to lean towards looking at all things through a positive lens while still maintaining a sense of honesty and integrity.

Could you describe the creative process behind this single, from concept to production?

This song started as an idea years ago that my bandmate brought to me. We didn’t have time to explore the idea at the time, but eventually found time when we reconnected after a few years apart. Funny how sometimes songs need to sit on the back burner for a while before we realize their potential and invest time into them. I’ve found this to be more and more common for the songs I am writing these days.

What can listeners expect to experience or feel when they listen to this track?

This song gives you a sense of purpose and energizes you to be the change that you want to see in the world. It’s hard to feel like you’re alone in the fight towards a better future for us all, but the truth is you aren’t. So many of us want to see mankind learn to get along and love one another in a true deep way that brings flourishing back to planet earth.

Are there any interesting stories or anecdotes from the recording or writing of this song
that you’d like to share?

Due to the nature of the song, it really came together quite quickly. I feel like this happens a lot with songs that you align with. This song was a quick in and out of the studio topped with a trip to the local dive bar for some wings and beers to celebrate a successful day.

As an artist, can you identify three key traits that define you?

I think the things that define me are hard working, relentless, and driven. All of these traits are what keeps me on the long road of being an artist. It’s not an easy one to travel at times and isn’t for the faint of heart.
