An Exclusive Conversation with Flo Chase

What initially sparked your interest in pursuing a career in the arts for those who may not be familiar with your background?

My parents put me into piano and guitar lessons at the age of 7. However, it wasn’t until later when my family relocated to Australia that I started singing and found my love for songwriting. With my French background I didn’t really speak much English at the time, so it was challenging for me at first to communicate and make new friends. Therefore, I believe music and songwriting were a place of comfort for me.
My original goal was to become a vet but after studying clinical exercise science at university for two years I decided to drop out and move to Sydney to pursue a music career.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single?

‘Seasons’ speaks about how lonely it can feel living in a big city filled with millions of people. Hollywood can be a very toxic place and living here, I find it rare to share real honest human interactions. Everyone is so caught up just trying to get by that it’s hard to create and maintain authentic relationships.

What themes or emotions are explored in this song?

I wrote this song at a time I was feeling trapped in this city and needed to get out and run away from it. The upbeat feeling of the song touches on hope and the power of dreaming and letting go. So, I guess a blend of loneliness, frustration and hope.

How does this single fit into the larger narrative of your music career or your upcoming projects?

‘Seasons’ is the feature single and titled track from my new album ‘Seasons’.
The 11-track offering feels like my most ambitious work to date and reflects on my experiences these past 24 months and the different ‘seasons’ ‘of life as well as touches on some of the current global issues.

Could you describe the creative process behind this single, from concept to production?
I co-produced ’Seasons’ with my great friend Houston Fry at Barking Owl Sound Studios and played most of the instruments on it. It was mixed by Kolton Lee (Kaleo, Foy Vance, Shania Twain, James Bay), and mastered by Joe Laporta (Shawn Mendes, David Bowie, Foo Fighters, the Weeknd).

What can listeners expect to experience or feel when they listen to this track?

As an independent artist, I’ve been involved in the entire creative process, and I consider these songs and stories some of my most honest work to date.
I would be lying if I said my life has only been made of highs these past twenty-four months; it’s been a rollercoaster which I think a lot of people can resonate with. I like to call these segments as different seasons of life and through each season I’ve drawn inspiration. I hope this record brings peace, comfort, and inspiration to listeners.

Are there any interesting stories or anecdotes from the recording or writing of this song that you’d like to share?

The first thing that comes to mind is when we recorded the electric guitar parts for this song which quickly ended up becoming such a driving force. Houston came up with this cool riff idea which is the first core memory that comes to mind when reliving the creative process. Playing around with production and sound design in the second verse was very fun also.

As an artist, can you identify three key traits that define you?

Honest, diligent, and ambitious.

What can we anticipate in terms of your upcoming projects?

I can’t share too much about it, but I couldn’t be more stoked the new songs I’ve been working on in the studio lately. This new sound and chapter feel super fun.
