An Exclusive Conversation with Derwin Daniels

What initially sparked your interest in pursuing a career in the arts for those who may not be familiar with your background?

I grew up in a music environment at home. My mother is a music lover, she listened to the jazz singers, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson and Dinah Washington. My dad was a musician and performed mostly on weekends and worked during the week. There were musicians and bands on almost every block in my hood. It was a natural thing to do.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single?

The song is an upbeat and happy melody in a major key. I gravitated to it immediately and thought listeners would also. Thanks to JEG Multimedia for releasing the song worldwide.

What themes or emotions are explored in this song?

Well, let me explain. When music is in a major key, It creates a vibe on the happy scale. Music should move people and have emotion, this song does just that with the production by Felton.

How does this single fit into the larger narrative of your music career or your upcoming projects?

I have been creating music for a few decades now and hoping that listeners will get ahold of some previous works. Brighter Than This appears to be introducing me to varied listeners.

Could you describe the creative process behind this single, from concept to production?

I know that Pilate, Sealey and Low are the writers and adding the touch of the Tenor Saxophone cleared the path for the melody to take hold. Production is Pilate performing on all other instruments, which he is great at and I added the horn in the studio setting.

What can listeners expect to experience or feel when they listen to this track?

Listeners will feel the positive vibes and take their mood to the happy meter. That’s the best way I can explain the song.

Are there any interesting stories or anecdotes from the recording or writing of this song that you’d like to share?

I got a call from friend and producer Felton Pilate. He advised, “ you need to hear this song.” I heard Brighter Than This and said, “lets record it.” Most of the tracks were done by Felton and I came in his studio and added the sax.

As an artist, can you identify three key traits that define you?

One, I like to treat others as I would like to be treated.
Two, is to be on time.
Three, Keep all things in life in perspective.

What can we anticipate in terms of your upcoming projects?

I am releasing an extended play project with more of my original recordings.
