A Conversation with Quinn Hedges

What initially sparked your interest in pursuing a career in the arts for those who may not be familiar with your background?

I grew up in a family that was surrounded by music, so I was exposed to singing, performing, and playing musical instruments at an early age. What sparked my interest in pursuing a career within the arts was how spiritually satisfying it was to create and write music. Once I started writing songs, it became evident that music was more than just a fun hobby for me. With music, especially guitar playing, I’ve always had the itch to progress and have always been uneasy with mediocrity. This always seemed to be a tell-tale sign that I am in the music business for the right reasons.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single?

I recently released a Christmas album called “Night Divine”, which is my interpretations of some Christmas classics. One of which was “Blue Christmas”, which was originally made popular by Elvis Presley in 1957. What inspired me about this song was how relatable the lyrics are. I always liked the tune and wanted to put my own stamp on it by putting an easy-flowing campfire vibe to it. It’s a song that evokes hope when listening, and I really like how it turned out!

What themes or emotions are explored in this song?

I think the emotions explored are loneliness, being away from your loved ones for Christmas, but also there’s a warm feeling of hope throughout the song as the storyteller is yearning to be re-connected with his loved one. While I did not write this song, I do believe I was able to insert my personal voice to it.

How does this single fit into the larger narrative of your music career or your upcoming projects?

Well, the single “Blue Christmas” as well as the complete album, “Night Divine” fits into the larger narrative of my music career by having a Holiday album in my repertoire. I feel this project really helped me gain confidence in my engineering and production skills, which will come into play in all future projects!

Could you describe the creative process behind this single, from concept to production?

The creative process of “Night Divine” was to select Christmas songs that have inspired me in the past and arrange them in my unique style. I went through many songs that didn’t quite feel right before I landed on the final list of songs. “Blue Christmas” was one of the last songs I selected to test; however, once I started tracking, all of the parts just fell into place and worked out nicely and the song made it onto the album. I wanted to explore an easy going version of this song with nice harmonies, and I think it turned out really well!

What can listeners expect to experience or feel when they listen to this track?

I think listeners will feel a sense of hope and longing to be with loved ones when they listen to this song.

Are there any interesting stories or anecdotes from the recording or writing of this song that you’d like to share?

I remember hearing Elvis Presley’s version of this song when I was young and I always gravitated toward the song. Little did I know that I would record my own version as an adult. I truly hope that is resonates with the listener.

As an artist, can you identify three key traits that define you?

As an artist, I believe three key traits that define me would be honesty, perseverance, and passion.

What can we anticipate in terms of your upcoming projects?

I’m very excited about my upcoming project called “Cousin Hedges” that I am currently recording with my cousin and collaborator, John B Hedges. We have been working on an album for a few years now and we are anticipating a release in 2024.
