An Exclusive Conversation with Jordyn Rayne

What initially sparked your interest in pursuing a career in the arts for those who may not be familiar with your background?

My name is Jordyn Rayne and I am a 24 year old pop/punk singer-songwriter in Edmonton, Alberta. I initially started out in musical theatre and even attended Randolph College of Performing Arts in Toronto before deciding it wasn’t for me. However, I knew I still wanted to sing and perform so I came back home and got accepted into the music program at MacEwan. After graduating with a vocal performance diploma from Grant MacEwan University in 2022, I released my first full-length album “Time Capsule.” This was a compilation of songs about heartbreak, friendship, and life’s complications. It was a folk/pop album and my first attempt at songwriting/producing my own music. Following this release, I gathered up a four-piece band and we toured around Edmonton promoting these songs.Through performing with this band, I began to determine that the way I performed, and the genre of the songs from my first album, did not mesh. After riding the release of my first original album, I started to write more music that captured more of the sound I wanted to portray. Writing my second album « Lady, » to be released in spring 2024, I wanted to write more powerful songs that emulated who I am as a person now, and how I want to be seen as a performer.  “Lady”: will serve as a perfect representation of my energy on stage and serves as my debut rock release

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single?

“Up in Lights” is all about the challenges of the music industry and rising past those challenges to come out on top. The music industry can be full of people who don’t have your best interests at heart and it’s all about pushing past the negativities they put on you. To me this song is me coming into my own, embracing who I am as an artist and having the confidence for it to take me as far as it can go.

What themes or emotions are explored in this song?

This song explores themes of power and a little bit of anger. Those are the themes that are mostly explored in alot of my other songs on my upcoming album “Lady.”

Could you describe the creative process behind this single, from concept to production?

For most of the songs I write I usually start humming a melody either in the car or in the shower and then I will rush to my piano and plunk out the chords. That’s when I will start putting lyrics to the melody I was singing. I knew I needed a song about rising up in the music industry and that’s how “Up in Lights” came about. Daniel Martin helped me bring the band elements into the song in production and Diego Fernandez helped shape the songs final elements.

What can listeners expect to experience or feel when they listen to this track?

I hope that it lights a fire under anyone who listens to it because it is meant to be a song that empowers anyone who hears it.

Are there any interesting stories or anecdotes from the recording or writing of this song that you’d like to share?

Not really but I will say thank you to all those who have doubted me in the past or turned their back on me. This song is because of you.

As an artist, can you identify three key traits that define you?

Hard working, ambitious, determined

What can we anticipate in terms of your upcoming projects?

My upcoming album “Lady” will be released on June 7th! I will be celebrating with an album release party with all those who made this album come to life.
