A Conversation with Buford Pope

What initially sparked your interest in pursuing a career in the arts for those who may not be familiar with your background?

« My musical journey started in a record store when I was 15 years old. A friend of mine introduced me to Bob Dylan, and when I heard him sing, I was completely blown away. I had never heard anything like it. I continued to listen to his music and discovered other artists in his genre. However, it took me another 15 years before I had the confidence to start composing my own music. Up until today, I have released nine albums, and I’m currently in the final stages of completing my tenth. »

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single?

« My latest single is titled ‘If The Blues Were Gone,’ featured on the album ‘A Brand New Leaf.’ The story behind it is plain and relatable. We all experience ups and downs. While I’d prefer my downs to be shorter, they serve as the wellspring of my musical ideas. I don’t welcome them, but when they’re gone, I take a deep breath and write. »

What themes or emotions are explored in this song?

« In my opinion, no one truly knows the essence of life. Therefore, there’s no use in attempting to decipher it; we must simply embrace the rollercoaster of existence. I’ve often wrestled with this concept, as I tend to overanalyze everything. This song may be my way of reminding myself that without setbacks, I would never fully appreciate the good things in life.”

How does this single fit into the larger narrative of your music career or your upcoming projects?

« This song would likely fit on any of my albums as it captures the essence of what it’s like to be on this Earth. These emotions will always persist as long as I’m alive.”

Could you describe the creative process behind this single, from concept to production?

« It was a lengthy process to finalize this song, as I was handling my own production. It was both a curse and a blessing, with numerous possibilities to shape the project. I eventually realized that it had to come to an end, and it was quite challenging.”

What can listeners expect to experience or feel when they listen to this track?

« That’s a tricky question, as all individuals have their own way of interpreting what they are hearing. If someone out there gets the message and can relate to it, I’d be very happy! »

Are there any interesting stories or anecdotes from the recording or writing of this song that you’d like to share?

I initially recorded it acoustically with just my guitar and vocals, then sent it for bass and drum accompaniment. However, the tempo didn’t align, leading to a re-recording. This process involved several back-and-forth adjustments, requiring constant rearrangement of the other instruments.

As an artist, can you identify three key traits that define you?

« I sometimes introduce myself as Mr. Disaster because I tend to make a big deal out of everything. Despite being a very serious person, I often see everything as a joke. I strive to remind myself that I’m just a grain in the sand, emphasizing my place in the grand scheme of life.”

What can we anticipate in terms of your upcoming projects?

”I keep myself busy composing music, hopefully there will be a new album out next year”
